Can you tell the difference between a Wasp and a Honeybee?
Unfortunately AgriPest come across many cases of misidentification which has resulted in honeybees been killed presuming they are wasps.
While both may seem similar at first glance, these stinging insects have some fascinating differences! Here’s a quick breakdown:
Appearance: Wasps are usually more slender with smooth bodies and bright yellow markings. Bees are typically rounder and fuzzier, often with black and yellow stripes.
Behaviour: Wasps are carnivorous and often predatory, feeding on other insects. They can be more aggressive, especially towards the end of summer. Bees, on the other hand, are vegetarian, primarily feeding on nectar and pollen. They’re more docile and focused on pollination.
Nesting Habits: Wasps tend to build their nests from wood fibres mixed with saliva, creating a paper-like material. Their nests are usually found in protected areas like under eaves or in the ground. Bees create wax comb hives, which can be found in various locations, including trees, buildings, or even underground.
Role in Ecosystem: Both play crucial roles! Bees are champions of pollination, helping plants reproduce and supporting biodiversity. Wasps also contribute to pest control by preying on other insects, helping to keep populations in check.
Stings: While both can sting, wasps can sting repeatedly without dying, whereas bees typically die after stinging due to the barb in their stinger.
