Finally spring has sprung and after what seems to of been a long winter the longer days and warmer weather will soon be with us.
But unfortunately the weather isn’t the only thing that will change, the movement and lifecycles of various insect species will be once again upon us.
Insects come in all shapes, sizes and some, a degree of risk. Many are harmless and pose no significant risk to the living or working environment however there are others that we all know and most dislike that can become a serious nuisance.

The Wasp
The venom a wasp produces contains pheromones that may cause other wasps to become protective and aggressive.
The sting of a wasp will often ware off within 24 hours however this is not always the case. The venom in the sting can cause anaphylactic shock which can be fatal.
Wasp nests can often be found in roof spaces using roof soffits as access points, other common locations are garden sheds and bird boxes.
Treatment against the wasps most often is swift with little disturbance to the household, AgriPest Management would strongly suggest a nest be treated as soon as you have seen it.
The Ant
The common garden ant most of us have come across can be found almost anywhere within the domestic environment, marching through the kitchen, under garden paths, lawns… the list goes on.
The common ant is a social creature that lives in colonies that consist of mainly sterile, wingless females.
If ants struggle to locate food that they require they often are drawn to the sweet scent of sugar or sugared products within the home.

The Tree Bee
The tree bee is a relatively recent addition to the AgriPest pest list, in 2015 the rate of call outs shot up 90%. It is suggested tree bee nests are found in trees and bird boxes however all our calls last year were for tree bees in building roof spaces.
The tree bee is less aggressive than the wasp and more often than not will go about their daily business with little risk to you or your family; however female worker bees do contain a sting which makes them a possible menace to the domestic environment.

The Honey Bee
We are often asked are honey bees protected by legalisation. The simple answer is no they are not, however as a company there are moral reasons to minimise the amount of treatments we do against the honey bee.
One is honey bees are often kept by bee keepers, if a honey bee was to be treated with insecticide there is a possible risk of hive contamination. Another reason is that honey bees are fantastic pollinators.
Honey bees can swarm which can often be of concern, more often than not the bees will keep moving on, on the rare occasion they do set up home within the domestic environment if left untouched they will rarely bother humans.
All this said honey bees still pose a threat as they have the capability to sting.
