Rabbit control in York

Rabbits are known for their ability to cause serious damage to crops and land within a short period of time.

Although you may expect to find rabbits within an agricultural setting, we are finding them moving closer towards the more domestic environment.

Rabbits are now been found breeding throughout the year as the milder, winter weather conditions are more suitable for year-round breeding.

In the right environment rabbits will dig, burrow and create warrens which can pose a serious threat to livestock, horses, people, machinery and property.

AgriPest have spent the last week clearing a 11-acre site of rabbits and repairing the land to make it safe for horses.

The rabbits had created warren systems within the horse paddocks which could prove fatal if a horse was to fall or trap its leg within the system.

AgriPest use a traditional rabbit control technique called ferreting.

Ferrets derive from the weasel family and are incredibly well designed for working their way through rabbit warrens which will cause the rabbit to bolt out, once out the rabbit will land in our specially designed nets and are then quickly dispatched causing the minimum amount of suffering for the rabbits.

If done correctly, ferreting can be an incredibly effective form of rabbit control, the team at AgriPest spend an awful lot of time handling, training and working our ferrets which has made them a formidable work force.

Ferreting is also an incredibly sustainable form of control, firstly no toxic chemicals are put into the ground which may potentially cause suffering to the rabbits, land or non-target species, Ferreting also allows us to reclaim the rabbit bodies which we utilise either by feeding to the ferrets, put into the human food chain or fed out to raptors, birds of prey, foxes, badgers etc.

Once we had cleared the site of rabbits we brought in the digger. We dug out all the warren systems, bolt holes and any other potential hazards posed to the horses, once the areas had been dug out, we leveled, re seeded and raked.
